Key Factors Behind the Decline in Global Urea Prices

1. Main driver – Absence of India:
India, as one of the largest importers of urea globally, plays a decisive role in price formation. The postponement of the much-anticipated tender by RCF (Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers), which typically covers large volumes, has created uncertainty and weakened market sentiment. The market is waiting for India’s return but remains uncertain about the timing.

2. Oversupply (Visible Overhang):
The report highlights a significant volume of urea available in the market, exacerbated by NFL’s reduced purchase to 2 million tons. This oversupply has strengthened buyers’ bargaining power and added further downward pressure on prices.

3. Regional price declines:
The report provides evidence of falling prices across several key urea-producing regions:

  • Indonesia: The final deal at $412.5/t was well below the seller’s target of $430/t, and even lower than previously rejected offers at $455/t.
  • Middle East: Forward offers at $410–405/t reflect a continuing downward trend.
  • Egypt: Although one isolated deal was done at a higher price ($452/t), this was an exception. More general prices and new offers (around $419/t) are at lower levels. Fertiglobe’s sale to Ethiopia at $419/t shows producers’ willingness to accept lower prices to reduce inventory.

4. Outlook:
Until India formally returns to the market and announces the results of its tender, conditions are expected to remain unstable and under downward pressure. Price declines are likely to continue for at least the coming weeks, unless unexpected demand emerges from other buyers or production is curtailed.

Final Assessment

This report depicts a urea market dominated by oversupply and the absence of strong, immediate demand—particularly from India. These conditions have reduced sellers’ pricing power, intensified competition among producers to place cargoes, and ultimately led to a broad and significant decline in global prices. Market sentiment is negative, and the bearish trend is expected to persist in the short term.
