The European Union allocates diverse grants for the production and expansion of clean energy in Africa through several large-scale programs and initiatives. The most significant of these include:

Africa-EU Green Energy Initiative (AEGEI)

Objective: To ensure access to sustainable electricity for at least 100 million people in Africa by 2030.

Grant Amount: €3.4 billion from the European Union.

Global Gateway – Energy for Africa

Objective: To mobilize public and private investments to accelerate renewable projects, provide affordable energy, and reduce poverty.

Latest Update: Released in April 2025.

Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with South Africa

Objective: To assist the transition from coal to clean energy sources in one of Africa’s largest economies.

Overall Financial Package: $8.5 billion, with a portion funded by the European Union; officially announced by Ursula von der Leyen in March 2025.

ElectriFI (Electrification Financing Initiative)

Nature: A blended financial facility with a budget of approximately €253 million from the European Union.

Scope of Activity: Supporting startups and small-scale renewable energy projects in African countries.

Tools: Providing infrastructure loans, equity investment, and technical assistance.

Renewable Energy Excellence Center Project in the Republic of Congo

Objective: To establish and equip a training and research center to accelerate the transfer of clean technologies.

Grant Amount: €1.5 million from the European Union (part of a regional program totaling €6 million).

Europe-Africa Call for Research and Innovation in Sustainable Energy (Call 2025)

Objective: To support innovative projects within the renewable energy value chain.

Call Budget: €10 million.

In addition to these initiatives, the European Union also provides technical support and capacity building through development funds (EDF/NDICI), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and other regional and multilateral financial instruments to rapidly increase the penetration of clean energy in Africa.
